Refurbished Neumann VMS 70 Vinyl Cutting Lathe

Book a session

A few years back, The Mastering Palace acquired a beautiful Neumann VMS 70 cutting lathe. While it was in impeccable physical shape, its internal electronics needed a complete overhaul.

We spent more than one year of blood, sweat and tears (and even more tears $$$) replacing nearly every single capacitor and transistor in the audio path of this stunning art piece of German engineering. The end result is a Lathe that can cut a record Louder, Longer and Cleaner than when it was brand new!

  • What is included with your vinyl mastering package?

We will cut and ship the agreed-upon number of sides to your manufacturing plant of choice, to be replicated for vinyl production.

  • What is the cost of vinyl mastering?

The cost of vinyl manufacturing depends on how many sides (and sets) your album requires. To get an estimate, please reach out to our studio manager with the following details: how many sides and how many sets.

  • What is the turnaround time for vinyl mastering?

If one of our engineers mastered the project, once we have the side splits, scribe number, and shipping contact info – we’ll have your lacquer masters shipped out within 2 to 4 business days. If your songs were mastered elsewhere, we’ll need the mastered stereo 24bit WAVs, as well.

  • Are my stereo masters okay to be used for vinyl manufacturing?

If your manufacturing plant will be cutting your lacquer masters for duplication from the stereo masters we’ve provided, they should be good to go. Provided you trust them to make tiny adjustments to the stereo masters to ensure your cuts deliver the best sound, you may want to allow that, as well. If you are unsure if you trust your plant to create the masters for replication, you may want to consider letting Mark Santangelo cut your lacquers. In addition to cutting his own projects for vinyl pressing, he also works closely with each engineer at The Mastering Palace, to make sure each album has the loudest and purest sound possible.

  • What do you need from me, to get started with cutting my vinyl masters?

Send us the Side Splits, Scribe Number, Shipping Details [Address, Contact Name, Phone]. If the audio was mastered elsewhere, include the mastered stereo 24bit WAVs.

  • How long should my vinyl side splits be per side?

We recommend that use the following numbers as a guide to help you figure out where your side splits should ideally be: 7”/45 RPM = up to 5 min/per side, 10”/45 RPM = 7 to 11.5 min/per side, 12”/45 RPM = 7.5 to 12.5 min/per side, and 12”/33 RPM = up to 26.5 min/per side. If you’re unsure, please reach out to our studio manager directly and they’ll be happy to help you.

  • What happens if there’s issues on the test pressings sent to me by my manufacturing plant?

Because vinyl is a physical product requiring human involvement throughout the entire process, having an issue on the test pressing is not uncommon. When this happens, you should reach out to your plant and follow their protocols. If a recut needs to be issued by The Mastering Palace, the great thing is that we already have all the settings in place, so the fee will only be $600/per side+shipping versus the full rate you initially paid.
